Our member organisations are at capacity over the holiday season. If you are able to foster a pet during this period, you are not only caring for a pet in need, but you are also helping to ease the workload and pressure on our teams.
If you’re a pet lover, please consider the foster care of a cat or dog while we work hard to find them a new home.
Foster a pet—the benefits
Pet fostering is a compassionate act. Every year, thousands of pets rely on the warmth and affection of foster homes as they await adoption. Are you ready to offer care to a pet in need?
A pet that joins a loving home will benefit from time outside the shelter environment.
Perhaps you’ve recently lost a pet of your own and are not quite ready to commit to a new furry friend. Fostering is a great way to enjoy the company of a pet without the long-term obligation.
If you already have pets, fostering can make a real difference to helping our pets become socialised and enjoy the company of other four-legged friends.
And, if you don’t already have a pet, fostering is an awesome way to see what sort of pet ownership works best for you and your lifestyle.
Foster a pet—the misconceptions
It’s easier than you might think to foster a pet, with plenty of support available to help you get the most out of this wonderful experience.
- It’s too expensive to foster a pet
Food and medical care is generally covered by the shelter/rescue organisation.
- I’ll get too attached to the pet
Foster care is generally for a short time and part of a pet’s journey to finding its next home.
- It’ll take up more time than I have
Please discuss your ideal time commitment with the shelter/rescue organisation and they will match your capacity with an appropriate pet. Some pets, such as those recovering from injury, may only need your loving home for a couple of weeks.
- A new pet won’t integrate with my own pets
Our member agencies have boundless expertise in helping you safely and happily meld a foster pet with your current pets.
