Legacy pet programs: Planning for your pet’s future
What would happen to your pets if you passed away or could no longer care for them?
Planning ahead can help ensure they receive the care they need.
Some CANA members offer formal pet legacy programs that may require a charitable gift in your Will, while others may be able to provide foster care or help find your pet a new home.
Contact the relevant organisation directly to discuss your circumstances and make arrangements for your pet.
CANA members’ legacy programs
Animal Welfare League Queensland
Legacy Pets Program
The program arranges future care and rehoming for registered pets. It also includes temporary emergency boarding if an owner is hospitalised. Owners must include a charitable gift to AWLQ in their Will to participate.
Saving Animals From Euthanasia Inc
Foster care and rehoming for pets
SAFE Inc can place pets in foster care and find Never a new home if their owner passes away or becomes unable to care for them. A charitable gift to SAFE is not required.
Sydney Dogs & Cats Home
Legacy Pets Program
The program arranges care and rehoming for an owner’s pets. To participate, the owner must include a primary gift to Sydney Dogs & Cats Home in their Will, rather than a contingent or back-up gift.
Scruffer Lovers
End of Life Care Program
The program allows owners to arrange for their dog to be cared for and appropriately rehomed if they pass away or become unable to care for them. A charitable gift is welcomed but is not required.
Dogs’ Homes of Tasmania
Dogs’ Homes of Tasmania does not currently have a formal pet legacy program. However, owners may leave instructions in their Will for their dog to be placed in the organisation’s care. Dogs’ Homes of Tasmania will accept the dog as a surrender, and a charitable gift is not required.
Lort Smith
Lort Smith does not currently offer a pet legacy program. It can accept a pet and care for them until they are adopted, but it cannot provide lifetime care.
